The State school system in England is free and begins at the age of five. The age of the child on 1st September sets when they can start school and which year they will be in.

Which school year will your child be in?

This depends on your child's age on the 1st September. For example if they are 4 but will be 5 on 1 st September they will be in Reception. If they are 5 but will be six by 1st September they will be in year 1. There are different systems in Northumberland depending on which area the school is in.

Pre School & Early Education

Before the age of five parents can choose what kind of childcare they use. The amount of free childcare available depends on the age of your child and on your circumstances .

Two-year-olds

It is for 38 weeks of the year (570 hours per year)

Three and four-year-olds

ALL three and four-year-old children are entitled to free high-quality early education for 15 hours per week until they reach compulsory school age. It is for 38 weeks of the year.

If you have a job you might be able to claim an additional 15 hours free per week This would take your free entitlement to 30 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year (1140 hours per year).
